esential questions
1) how does our earth's surface look the way it does?
well, I think the earths surface looks like this because of time adn how people treat the envirornment and also bevause of erosions that happened over time, also the amount of water and sand we have aroung the world! also natural disasters are a big part of how our earth looks the way it does because when some extreme diasaster like a volcano eruption happens it effects how the earth looks now. there are four types of erosions they are wind erosion, water erosion, chemicla erosion amf glacier eriosion. water erosion is when a big amount of water such as a flood or really heavy rain happens is creates canyons and etc. glacier erosion is when a big amount of glacier is moved across a land and over all the hills and mountains in that land. wind erosion is when wind picks up small pieces of sand from a dessert and creates wind erosion

Mariam's Year Reflection
My Year In Grade 5...
Overall my year in grade five was amazing! I have realized a growth in my work overall in every subject, in fifth grade I really enjoyed the units in every subject and that might be one reason why i have really improved in the subjects. throughout the year I realized a growth when i was working or even in an assessment I really think that I have gotten better in all the subjects in fifth grade in may be because of the amazing way my teacher teaches us or because like I said before I enjoy the subjects so I wanted to improve more and keep reading and or writhing, doing math and so on. Grade five has been a miraculous year because I had a step learning curve and i also have enjoyed having many more privileges as the head of the elementary school, and of course we can not forget the advantage of the best class room ever! Mrs. kasal you have really helped me this year, on my worst days that I do not want to do any school work you would make me smile and enjoy my day in school way more shockingly! You taught me a lot in all the subjects in many different ways and i am sure Mrs. Kasal you got me all prepared for middle school. Mrs.Kasal I really love the way you teach us it is really a privilege having you as our grade five teacher.
Responses To Parent Questions
1)"how has your writing developed this academic year?"
- response- my writing has developed a lot by writing more descriptive writing, I realized this because before when we did the on demand at the beginning my writing was not very descriptive and the reader could not really picture my writing. Now on my previous an demand my writing is becoming more and more descriptive and now the reader can really picture my writing. My writing also improved in the length of how much I write, when we did the on demands also my writing was shorter and not as detailed as now, now my length of my writing is becoming much longer and way more developed than before. My writing also became much better by the ideas that I get now they are easier to write about and I can explain ta lot about them and also now I get more ideas in less time!
- evidence- my writing from the beginning of the year and from the end of the year on demands. also my writing notebook and how I have been brainstorming my ideas faster and more developed form the start of the year.
2)"what do you think your greatest strength and greatest weakness in each subject?"
- looking through my writing my greatest strength would be to write informational books because I like to find out information about a topic then teach others about that topic, it is really strengthening my dream about becoming a teacher. my weakens in writing would be to write about anything would be pretty hard for me to write something long and strong I need to be passionate about it and be willing to write about it a lot! for math my greatest strength would be that I can now do most questions correct, but I need to work on my speed on my multiplication and division! for reading my greatest strength would be that now I can do more jots better and stronger. my weakness is that I need to work on is reading every day at home, that is an important goal I need to work on because I know in middle school the reading will become much more and I need to get use to reading every day a lot. for science my strength would be that now I can do experiments and I could write about my prediction and essential question and all the things we have to do in our notebooks before we can do the experiment I think though I need to work on is to do more wild things in the experiment like to mix the gooey sand mixing.for social studies I so far see that my strength would be that I can research great information in a short amount of time on the other side though my weakness would be that I can not really expand so much on my research in social studies.
- evidence- assessments from each subject at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year.
3 How Will You Improve These Weaknesses
I will need to start taking action quick because I am going into middle school and these weaknesses will become a bigger problem! for writing as I said my weakness in that I can not write about anything I need to be passionate about it and be willing to write about it a lot so it can be my best work! I can improve this weakness by working towards all my goalsReading
In reading i have been enjoying the units a lot, my personal favorite was the fantasy unit because I really enjoy reading books that have things that I imagine of or things that are not true! I also realized that when I have book clubs I actually read a lot more because I know that there are people who are counting on me to read a certain amount of pages by a date, on the other hand when I am just reading independently I do not get as many pages read in the same amount of time. Reading is not one of my strongest subjects but I am trying to get as strong as I can in reading especially that middle school is coming up next year! But I have improved in my note taking, I have been taking more jots and expanding on them much more than I used to in the beginning of the year. Most of the time I would want to read other times I would not be really focused into my book as much because if I do not like the book I am reading or if I do not find it interesting I would rarely want to read that book.Writing
During writing I have realized that I have improved quiet some. I really enjoy writing time i always have an idea to write about, and I would be ready to write about it. during the past years I did not really enjoy writing as much as I do now. Mrs.Kasal you have really mad me stronger in writing when you give us the strong words to use instead of the words we always use. you're feedback is always improving my work and I always take your advice and put it to work! you just have a way of making me want to keep writing, you're mini lessons also just want me to use the strategies in my writing straight away. in writing I enjoyed the unit informational the most because I picked a topic i was really interested in learning things about it and I also really like researching and finding information about that topic my topic was NASA and now I know a ton of things about NASA. I would personally say that I am slowly starting to have writing as one of my strongest subjects. writing allows me to express how I am feeling and to say all the things that are on my chest!
Math
during this years math I have grown a bit more from the beginning of the year especially that I have participated in math Olympian and it was a bit more challenging for me than the normal class math time. I would say math is one of my stronger subjects. this is my fifth year doing eureka math. I thought math was actually kind of cool this year because of the way Mrs. Kasal teaches us she makes it cool and interesting to learn about. I am improving on my multiplication, I just need to work on division a bit more. my favorite unit was division because it really challenged me to push my self to improve in my division but t still needs work. the decimal unit was my most most favorite unit because it was new and it was a really cool thing to learn about.
Science
I thought science was interesting and fun because I leaned a lot of things because the units we had in science were really interesting, I enjoyed the unit biomes
Social studies
in social studies I have beenCitizenship- Core Values
the core value that helped me the most was perseverance and creativity and of course responsibility! overall all the core values are very important and they all helped me a lot but those three core values are what got me throw grade five. perseverance helped me be the brave a powerful girl I am today, creativity also really helped me be the imaginary girl today with creativity I could not be me at all! responsibility also really helped me be the responsible girl I am today, I have always been I guess the "responsible girl in my friends."
Most Challenging...
the most challenging thing was I guess that I needed to
Most Enjoyable....
the most enjoyable thing in 5K is quiet hard to decide because everything was really fun and enjoyable, but I think there night be one really fun thing that we did was when it was Mrs.kasal's birthday party once she came back from her meeting we surprised her by each person getting for her a present and we got goodies and we throw Mrs. kasal a birthday party for the rest of the day we spent it having a blast for the rest of the day. we had dance party's and music on and it was just a blast!
Most Proud Of...
- that my desk stayed very organized for the whole year I am really proud of my self that I did that because everyone else mostly has a pretty messy desk, for the past years my desk was tidy for most of the time but not really for the whole year. I think this is very important especially that we are going into middle school and we will not have "a desk" our things will be going from place to place and I have to stay tidy to succeed in middle school with my organization
- evidence would be to show my desk and maybe someone else's if okay!
Most Growth....
- this year I have shown the most growth personally I think in writing because I was not a fan of writing and I did not really have that good of writing ether on the other hand now in writing I am really proud of how I have grown as a writer. my writing now is really improving!
- evidence my diffrence in writing

thesis statment
thesis statment:
due to the modern technology in schools it is gradually starting to become all online. slowly the horror of robots teaching students instead of teachers is a few steps away from us!! I think that we have to reduce the amount of technology schools use or else robots will be teaching students sooner then we think!
reaserch questions:
-how is technology going to effect students and teachers in the future
-will there be schools in the future or will it be all online
-how will students feel when they will not
-will technology help students if so what benifits will it bring

4 Corner Activity Reflection
Question- Have your ideas, opinions, values, beliefs changed in any way? Was there something that surprised you? How do people communicate different perspectives?
Reflection
my opinions did change because at first i thought that science has brought only positive benefits but Youngseo convinced me that science has brought positive and negative benefits to the world. also i thought at first that animal testing is necessary but another group convinced me that animal testing is actually necessary because how would you know all the information we know now about animals without testing the animals. the statement that boys are better than girls it surprised me that a boy agreed with the statement because the rest of the class said NO gender equality! people communicate in different ways by stating their opinion and maybe disagreeing or agreeing
statements
-Science has only brought positive benefits to everyone.
-Technology is everywhere in the world
-Boys are better at Science than girls.
-The Internet has made the world smaller
-Animal testing is necessary.
-GMOs are safe.
-Climate change is caused by people.
-Technology has negatively affected close family time.
-Students should not be allowed to use personal digital devices at school.
-Should all cars now be electric.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Why does our Earth's surface look the way it does?
This unit was a blast i had a blast while learning a lot about erosion, when Mrs. Kasal was telling us about erosion's at the beginning or the unit I know nothing about erosion's or even what it meant.
The earth's surface looks the way it does because of Erosion's that happened over time , as the water, rocks landforms, earthquakes, tsunami's and basically all natural Disasters were happening the earths surface changed. throughout this unit i learned a whole lot about natural disasters, erosion's and canyons.also i learned learned why do all these natural disasters happen and how they happen. especially i learned a lot during our wadi field trip, that the whole wadi that we were standing on was an ocean one time. and there were a ton of animals swimming around this area before. the fossils thought me a lot that the fossil looks the way it does because of where it was staying.
now once i walk around and see canyons of any natural disaster i will know how and what it was made of. this unit was very interesting and new for me because almost all of the information i learned was brand new to me. this unit is most probably one of my favorite units so far in 5th grade.
cool careers
Paleontologist
A paleontologist is a scientist who studies the fossilized remains of all kinds of organisms such as plants, animals, fungi, bacteria and other single-celled living things that have been replaced by rock material or impressions of organisms preserved in rock., and is interested in knowing the history of organic life on earth. the most famous and popular paleontologist is Jack HornerJohn R. "Jack" Horner he was born June 15, 1946 he's an American paleontologist most famous for discovering and naming Maiasaura, providing the first clear evidence that some dinosaurs cared for their young.
Environmental Scientist
A Environmental Scientist uses the principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. They are involved in efforts to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control.Environmental specialists are scientists who observe the impact of a population on the environment, identify problem areas and recommend solutions. Many specialists work for the government to ensure that specific regulations regarding air, water and soil are met.
Geochemist
A Geochemists study the composition, structure, processes, and other physical aspects of the Earth. They examine the distribution of chemical elements in rocks and minerals, as well as the movement of these elements into soil and water systems.
Geochemistry are important because the chemistry of the earth, is important because it defines bio-diversity and the well-being of organisms, including humans. Geochemistry is about understanding the distribution of chemical compounds in the earth and their changing concentrations as a consequence of their fate in the geochemical cycles
definitions
Rapid process of erosion- rapid eroding
Slow process of erosion- slow eroding
examples
some examples of rapid process of erosion one example is earthquakes, they are an example of rapid process of erosion because they happen normally very fast and when it happens it is very dangerous. another example of rapid process of erosion is volcanoes they are very dangerous once they erupt and it is very unknown once it happens. landslides are also an example of rapid process of erosion because they are also very dangerous. all these examples are rapid process of erosion because they all happen very rapid and once they happen that are very dangerous.
details- volcanoes
- Volcanoes are formed when magma from within the Earth's upper mantle works its way to the surface. At the surface, it erupts to form, lava flows and ash deposits. Over time as the volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger and bigger.
- the types of volcanoes are : Shield, Cinder Cones & Composite Cones. The earth ejects lava, rock fragments, hot vapor and gases during volcanic eruptions
- The most active volcanoes in the world are Kilauea volcano on Hawaii is the world's most active volcano, followed by Etna in Italy and Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion island.
examples
an example of slow processes of erosion is weathering, this is a sl ow process of erosion because it happens pretty slowly and it is not quiet dangerous
details- weathering
- Weathering is the breakdown of rocks at the Earth’s surface, by the action of rain, water, extremes of temperature, and biological activity. It does not involve the removal of rock material.
- There are three types of weathering, physical chemical and biological.
- Erosion is the process by which soil and rock particles are worn away and moved elsewhere by wind, water or ice. Weathering involves no moving agent of transport.
Mechanical and Chemical Erosion
Mechanics erosion- Is the process of breaking big rocks into little ones. This usually happens at the surface of the planet. Temperature also affects the land. The hot days and cool nights always make things expand and contract.
Chemical Erosion- Is when rocks are broken down, there are many types of chemical weathering, including hydrolysis, oxidation, carbonation, acid rain and acids made by lichens.

wadi field trip
As we walked through the wadi that was once a ocean millions of years ago.The sand filled our shoes the same as the experience filled our heart. the experience of the hike is one I will always remember, the view, and the passion of completing the hike. even though our legs were sore and the sun was shining at us with extreme heat we defiantly loved this field trip.
As Mr. bill explained how the rock was made of lime stone. When he put the liquid of 10% acid and how it made the rock and sand fizz up, it was marvelous to see what a liquid could do! As Mr. Bill said the oldest rocks are at the bottom of the sand. As he handed out some fossils such as oyster shells- the oyster shells looked a lot different from each other because of where the oysters were living in different places, he also showed us clam fossils, snail fossils , sand dollar fossils and plankton fossils. he also said that there are 2 animals that got extinct they are the Baslasorus which ate sharks, the animal that defended them and was also extinct is the Magladon . The Magladon was last seen 2 million years ago. a fun fact Mr. Bill said was that the ground that we are standing on is actually 50 meters sea level and some of the hills are 300-400 meters sea level!
some simular things that I saw at the wadi and at our class stream table were that they both had canyouns and sand.

Question:
can you minupliate the direction of the water flow?
Will the cubes stop the water adn create a dam?
Hypothesis:
i think the ccubes will not stop the water from flowing because the water will find a way and still create a river
Meterials: fine sand, rough sand, a ruler, plastic cup with a small hole, clay bucket, wooden wedge and a stream table. cubes- small and large
Prrocedure :
- we set up the computer
- we put the clay, fine sand and rough sand into the big tray
- we mixed the caly, rough sand and fine sand
- we put the wooden wedge unnder the strem table
- we placed the stream table at the edge of the table
- we placed the bucket under the table
- we placed the ruler then on it the the plastic cup with a hole at the bottom
- we added the cubes
- we createda dam
- then we poured some of the water into the plastic cup with a hole
- then the river started accuring

Virtual Reality Experience
throughout my virtual reality experience i was amazed! it looked so real. the water fall was personally pretty scary i felt like i was going to fall. and the grand canyon was amazing it was miraculous and I felt that I was actually there it was an amazing experience and an amazing way to show people the different things on line all in a "phone" and it seemed so real! I think it is an amazing invention for who ever invented the virtual reality it was overall superrrr cool it is a memory to remember! a question I have is that who invented the vertual reality and when did they invent it and how did they invent it are my questions
APL QUOTE
"Don't raise your voice, improve your argument."
-Desmond Tutu
I think this quote is very nicec and it might mean when you are agueing do not get mad and raise your voice you should make your agument strong and you shoul improve your points. this quote is very good because you should definetly not raise your voice in an argument and you should always try to make your opinion stronger. My thoughts about this quote is that it has a very good mesage and you should try to cousider that when you are argueing.

Question:
what happens when the force of water is increased
Hypothesis:
i think the cnayou will go deepper
Meterials: fine sand, rough sand, a ruler, plastic cup with a small hole, clay bucket, wooden wedge and a stream table.
- then we poured some of the water into the plastic cup with a hole
- then the river started accuring
Observation
10 seconds- the water is starting to flow without creating a canyon
20 seconds- making very small canyons at the bottom of the sand
30 seconds- the canyous are becoming a bit larger
40 seconds- we realized that with the previous experiments the canyoun would start from the begining to the end but this experiment is it creating a canyon from hte bottom to the top
50 seconds- water is flowing very fast
60 seconds- the canyons are becoming a bit thicker
1 min- the sand is becoming weaker.
1 min and 30 seconds- the canyouns are becoming thicker not longer
2 min- the water is making smaller canyons
Counclusion
throughout the standard experiment we relized that when the water went into the land it did not create a river from the begining instead it created a river from the end. the river was cshaped as a fan. the sand went into the water and went to the bucket of water. the clay and fine sand more of it had went into the water than the rough sand because they are lighter and softer thatn the rough sand.
experement two : desposion
Question:
what happens to the land that gets eroded?
Hypothesis:
i think the land will disapper nd it will go under land.

- we placed the ruler then on it the the plastic cup with a hole at the bottom
- then we poured some of the water into the plastic cup witha hole
- then the river started accuring
Observation
10 seconds water is sterting to move
20 seconds warter is flowing in a pool
30 seconds the water is flowing
40 seconds water forming into a pool
50 seconds water is going seperate ways
Counclusion
throughout the standard experiment we relized that when the water went into the land it did not create a river from the begining instead it created a river from the end. the river was cshaped as a fan. the sand went into the water and went to the bucket of water. the clay and fine sand more of it had went into the water than the rough sand because they are lighter and softer thatn the rough sand.

esperiment one: water erosion
Question:
what happens to land when water flows over it?
Hypothesis:
i think the land under the water will create a river .
Meterials: fine sand, rough sand, a ruler, plastic cup with a small hole, clay bucket, wooden wedge and a stream table.
Prrocedure :
- we set up the computer
- we put the clay, fine sand and rough sand into the big tray
- we mixed the caly, rough sand and fine sand

- we placed the bucket under the table
- we placed the ruler then on it the the plastic cup with a hole at the bottom
- then we poured some of the water into the plastic cup witha hole
- then the river started accuring
Observation
throughout the standard experiment
i realizes that
10 seconds into the experiment the water was starting to go deep
20 seconds and the water almost into the rest of the sand
30 seconds the water is starting to flow
40 seconds the water is making a small river
50 seconds then water is creating a deeper river
1 min water is creatinga biger hole
1 min and 10 seconds the large river si creating a smaller fiver
1 min adn 20 seconds there is a larger river now
1 min and 40 seconds the sand is starting to fall
Counclusion
over all i think this experement was cool and we got the see what happeens to land when water flows over it and my prediction was correct the water did create a river into the land.

Mariam As A Scientist
Throughout the year in 5k so far my faivorite unit was the adaptation unit because we got to learn about an planet, animal and how they adapt to there biome. science is one of my faivorite subjects is class because I get to do experiments and I also get to learn about new things. Some of the strengths that I have in science class are thet I am always an time and do what I need to do in class and the rest for homework. As a scienentist i learned that science is a realy cool subject and you can do really cool thins in it. Science in my opinion is a interesting subject because you will find out how they work. I think that science is a very important subject to learn because you will learn how things work, the technology and why is it important.
NASA
Overall I created a well written informational book about NASA.I included text features such as text boxes, quotes, ........
